Welcome
Welcome to Elder Class. We are a new class in the Communication Pathway here at Hawthorns. Our curriculum is semi-formal which means that as well as academic work, our main focus is developing the children's functional and social communication. Basically, we want our children to be able to say what they want and do not want, explain how they feel and be able to engage in meaningful friendships and learning.
Our Classroom
Teaching Team
Mr Brown, Mrs Kippax and Miss Rutley have a huge amount of experience in supporting children with additional needs. We might look terrifying, but we're actually very approachable. We are here to support not only the pupils, but also parents and carers, so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, queries or worries.
Getting In Contact
While, unfortunately, COVID means that we can't have the usual catch up when dropping off or picking up, there are many ways to keep in contact and up to date with what is happening in class. We have home-school diaries which we check every day. If you do want to have a conversation about something, we can arrange a phone call or video call at a time that is convenient to you. There will still be regular meetings about progress being made and to discuss the Personal Learning Plans. You can also use technology to keep in contact:

Autumn Term 2020
This term we have focused on the book The Colour Monster. We have been focusing on feeling angry, calm, sad and happy; creating lots of art while also learning to understand our emotions better. In the weeks up to Halloween we will be starting to think about being scared.
After Halloween, we will be basing our work around Planes, Trains and Automobiles (and boats), before inevitably focusing on Christmas.
Spring Term 2021
This term we will be basing our work on the book Zoo, by Anthony Browne, and the movie Madagascar. We will be doing lots of learning around zoo and safari animals - linking together our writing, art and even some science and geography!
Lockdown Learning
For now, most of us will be learning from home. All of you have received a home learning pack which will cover the academic side of what we do in school - mainly Maths and Phonics. It will also contain a pack containing weekly topic ideas, based around the story Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. This contains elements of geography and science, largely learning through art and craft activities. In order to support speaking and listening we have also included some word mats, covering the topic and also some cooking activities.
Please contact us about anything via the usual email address - and please share whatever you are doing so we can put it on Twitter.
This is a suggested timetable for the week:
